The same shortage, a bigger bill of materials

The root cause is identical to the phone story: AI data centers are buying up so much DRAM and NAND flash capacity — for the high-bandwidth memory that powers AI servers — that memory makers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are shifting factory capacity away from ordinary consumer memory chips. Less supply for consumer devices, with data-center demand paying more per wafer, means consumer memory gets scarcer and pricier.

Laptops feel this more acutely than phones do, for a simple reason: they use more memory and storage per unit. TrendForce, the semiconductor research firm tracking the shortage, estimates that under normal conditions DRAM and solid-state storage make up roughly 15% of a mainstream notebook’s bill of materials — but after several straight quarters of price increases, that share was projected to exceed 30% in the first quarter of 2026. Two responses, and the second one is the sneaky one

Faced with a much higher cost to build the same laptop, brands have two options, and most are doing a mix of both depending on the product tier:

1. Raise the sticker price outright. Why this is harder to catch than a phone spec downgrade

Go directly to the brand’s official product page and check the RAM, storage type/capacity, and display spec listed for that specific SKU today. Compare it against the review or recommendation you’re actually relying on — if the review doesn’t mention a SKU number, treat its spec claims as provisional until you verify them against the current listing.

3. Check the review’s publish date against today’s date. A review is a snapshot of a laptop at one point in time. The longer the gap between the review date and your purchase date, the more likely a silent spec revision has happened in between — especially in 2026, when component substitutions are happening faster than usual because of the memory shortage.

4. Check whether the RAM and storage are soldered or upgradable. This matters more this year than in a typical year. A laptop with soldered (non-upgradable) RAM locks you into whatever capacity ships in the box, permanently — there’s no fixing a downgrade after the fact. Who’s most exposed

Not every laptop buyer is equally at risk here:

  • Budget and mid-range laptops are, in our view, the tier most exposed specifically to quiet spec downgrades rather than sticker-price hikes — these buyers tend to be more price-sensitive, so a brand risks losing the sale outright with a visible price increase and has more incentive to trim specs instead. There’s no universal answer, but the practical read lines up with what we found for phones: memory prices are expected to keep climbing through at least the first half of 2026, and most brands haven’t finished passing the latest cost increases on to buyers yet. Some longer-range analyst forecasts are even more cautious — Bernstein’s memory-chip analysts, for instance, have suggested DRAM and NAND prices may not meaningfully ease until 2028, after further increases in the meantime — though forecasts that far out should be treated as directional, not a guarantee. Either way, waiting for prices to correct downward isn’t a strong bet in the near term. If you need a laptop for work or study in the next few months, buying sooner — while doing the spec checks above on the specific unit you’re about to buy — is generally more sensible than waiting on the hope that a shortage-driven price spike reverses itself soon.
